What is Self-Confidence?

Self-confidence is simply a feeling of trust in one’s abilities, qualities, and judgment. When you have self-confidence, you trust yourself and are fully confident in whatever you do. There is self-assurance and you admire your self-image. When one lacks self-confidence or have a low self-esteem, his life is affected in more ways than one.  His quality of life plummets (if it was ever high), and his self-image to him is worthless.

There are many factors which can cause you to have a poor self-esteem. These things sometimes might not be in our power to prevent, but the result is completely in our power to avoid. A few amongst the many causes of low self-confidence include but not limited to the following:

  1. Do what you love

One of how to build self-confidence in yourself is doing what you love. This is the first step you must take. Doing what you love isn’t difficult. Just as it sounds, when you want to go to a spar – do, to the Mall? Go. If you want noodles, eat it, if you want chocolate, enjoy it.

When you start doing what you love, your self-image starts to improve. You start seeing yourself in a different light. Your love for yourself not only increase but your self-love too. You now believe in your choices and options. However, you must be careful, since taking responsibility for yourself means you’re also responsible for the mistakes you make – of course.

However, this is also the reason why you’re on the journey. It is all about improving your esteem which you need to improve.

  1. Know yourself

You must know yourself. Self-awareness is very important in the life of anybody. You must completely know who you are and what you want. Wait!!!  Do you even know who you are? Go figure it.

Also in any situation, you should have an opinion that is uniquely yours. You must know what your thought is on this or that (put the topic here).

You don’t have to be opinionated anyway, having an opinion doesn’t mean you must force it on anyone. Having an opinion just means you won’t be pushed around, but do not be rigid.

  1. Surround yourself with like-minded people

You cannot talk about how to build self-confidence in yourself without talking about those who inspire the best part of you. When you have people whose lifestyle and choices are different from yours, you tend to feel like fish out of water. When you are with like-minded people, you are free and can express yourself, which does a lot for your confidence and esteem.

However, you must be careful not to be too comfortable in your comfort zone. Try other waters too.

To get the best people, look in your church or religious places, school, and sports field or anywhere where what you love is being done.

  1. Believe in yourself

Basically, poor self-confidence is either a result of not believing in oneself or brings about not believing in yourself. It is a cause and effect thing.

Handling it starts with you believing in yourself – period.

Understand that peoples opinion do not define you. Realize that you are what you are. Stop being scared of the unknown. If for instance, you have been given a speech to present, you take it head on. Worst case scenario, you fail in the speech, and can’t pronounce your name, best case scenario, you kill the speech!

Both are possible, but the former is more likely when you are dead scared before climbing on the podium, the latter would be the case when you believe your audience have all come to cheer you, and that’s just what you’d see, by mere believing in it, and holding on to your belief.
